1. You must have a willingness to overcome the fear of heights. Determination to succeed is vital. If you really want to conquer the fear of heights you’re half way there already.
2. Talk to the following people about why they feel confident at heights. Find out what helps them to do this. Examples include window cleaners, construction workers, tree fellers, linesmen, rock climbers, mountaineers, crane drivers, etc. Ask them why they don’t have a fear of heights? Find someone to help you – you must trust their judgement.
3. Consider the worse case scenario – if you’re enclosed in a tall building what can happen to you? Simple: Nothing! If you’re on the first step of a ladder, what can happen to you? Not a lot!
4. Start on a small height and slowly get comfortable with that, then go a little higher and higher and higher. You don’t have to do these all the in same day. Baby steps! And don’t forget to get yourself a big pat on the back when you’ve achieved each stage.
5. Desensitization – a slow step-by-step process. Example going up a ladder one step at a time. Then higher the next day.
6. Get Hypnotized! Get a licensed professional hypnotist. They will present the information about your fear to your subconscious mind so that when you are awakened, you will no longer have a fear of heights. It may take a few sessions, but you have to believe!
7. Relaxation techniques can help you deal with your fear of heights without actually getting to the root of your fear. These might include deep breathing exercises, yoga or muscle relaxation, where you ignore the fact that you are at a height you don’t like.
8. Virtual reality exposure therapy, you are exposed to a virtual version of your fear of heights. This might be a video of the top of the Empire Building.
9. Try to find out the reason for your fear. Did someone scare you when you were small? Discuss the condition with your close ones, a counselor, health professional, or someone who can help you work through the underlying reasons.
10. When looking down from a big height, grasp railings or fences to build a sense of safety and security in that position.
If you have any ideas on how to overcome the fear of heights let me know…
Mickey Mouse popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad 20 years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner. ~Walt Disney
All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you. ~ Walt Disney
We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. ~Walt Disney
You’ve got to have a positive attitude no matter what you’re doing!
“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect It’s successful outcome.”
-William James
“I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.”
– Martha Washington
It’s all about having a positive attitude…
To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are.” -Muhammad Ali
“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is how having a positive attitude works: “Two men look out the same prison bars; one sees mud and the other stars.” Frederick Langbridge
Let me know if you have any ‘positive attitude’ quotes that have spurred you on!?
I thought you might like to see the cover of the book Peter Sinclair and I collaborated on…Smile Your Way To Success. Peter fed me the idea that some negative words were always trying to get into your head. I came up with this idea to repell them! There’s no way negative thoughts should be let into your head. Keep them out at all costs – even if it means wearing a cast iron helmet! The book is about 100 pages with a short motivational article and cartoon on each page.
Over the coming months I’ll be blogging further cartoons from the ‘Smile YOUR Way To Success‘ book.
Let’s build our success together! See you tomorrow!
When commissioning cartoons… Pick TWO of the three options!
Good+Fast = Expensive Choose this and I’ll postpone every other project on my drawing board, my round of golf or give up my footy match ticket and work day and night to get your job done. It WILL NOT BE CHEAP though!
Good+Cheap = Slow Choose good and cheap and I’ll still do a great job at a discounted price. But you’ll have to be patient while I fit you in after my higher paying clients, updating my web site, going down the gym, my footy matches, rounds of golf and liquid lunches!
Fast+Cheap = Inferior Choose this option at your peril. It will still be delivered on time but it will be inferior, as many corners as possible will be cut. You know the saying ‘You get what you pay for!’ The least favorable option in my opinion!
